Sinn Sisamouth is one of the best-loved singers and songwriters in Cambodian history and is often called the "King of Khmer Music". He was born in Stung Treng Province in the early 1930s (sources differ on the exact year) and was active from the 1950s until 1975.
He worked in the Phnom Penh music scene that mixed Khmer traditional melodies with rock and roll, rhythm and blues and jazz, and he sometimes set Khmer words to Western tunes. His songs are about love, longing and the Cambodian countryside. He was admired at the royal court and became a singer with the Royal Orchestra.
He disappeared during the Khmer Rouge years, and the exact circumstances are still unknown. Many of his recordings survived and remain central to Khmer music today.
