Summary

The life and career of Khemarak Sereymun, the Cambodian singer and actor currently signed to Galaxy Navatra after earlier stints at U2 Entertainment, Sunday Production, and Reaksmey Hang Meas.

Khemarak Sereymun was born Khem Bunthai on 3 November 1985 in Kampong Cham Province. Since debuting in 2003, he has built one of the more durable careers in modern Khmer pop, moving through four record labels and into television judging. He is currently signed to Galaxy Navatra, which he has recorded under since 2023.

Early Life and Discovery

Public details of Khemarak Sereymun's childhood are scarce, but by his late teens he had caught the attention of U2 Entertainment, one of Phnom Penh's most active labels in the early 2000s. In 2003 the label signed him and gave him the stage name he still performs under today.

Breaking Through with U2 Entertainment

His first major success came almost immediately: a cover recording titled "Heart of a Boxer," which lent its name to his debut solo album the same year. Two more solo covers albums followed, in 2004 and 2005, alongside two duet records: "Mae Tha" (2006) with Aok Sokunkanha, and "Slow Motion" (2007) with his sister and frequent singing partner, Khemarak Srey Pov. Songs such as "Prom Tang Ahlai" and "Prolit Bat Beong" were well received during this period and helped establish him as one of U2's leading voices.

U2 Entertainment closed in 2007, reportedly after financial losses worsened by unauthorized copying of its recordings, a problem that hit much of Cambodia's cassette and CD-era music industry.

The Sunday Production Years

Khemarak Sereymun moved to Sunday Production in 2008, beginning the longest and most publicly visible chapter of his career. The label built him into a touring regular, pairing him again with his sister for performances at home and abroad, including a 2010 trip to Bangkok where he also sang at a concert marking 60 years of Cambodia-Thailand friendship, and a 2011 tour stop in the United States.

His Sunday Production catalogue leaned into the sentimental and comic, rural-life themes popular in Khmer pop at the time, with titles including "Worried with the Moon," "I Was Wrong," "Get a French Husband," "Farmers Also Have Dollars," "Want a Wife," and "Lost Shoes." In 2012 he stepped from music into film, appearing in "Vampire," Sunday Production's third large-scale Khmer feature.

Reaksmey Hang Meas and a Thai Collaboration

After leaving Sunday Production in 2016, he signed with Reaksmey Hang Meas in 2017, debuting there with "Stung Treng Bong Ery." In 2018 he crossed into Thailand's entertainment scene, collaborating with Thai singer Tik Shiro on "Sad Man" and performing with him on Thai TV Channel 3, a rare cross-border pairing for a Cambodian pop artist of his generation.

Signing with Galaxy Navatra

Khemarak Sereymun has been signed to Galaxy Navatra since 2023, following earlier runs at U2 Entertainment, Sunday Production, and Reaksmey Hang Meas. More than two decades after his debut, he continues to release new material through Galaxy Navatra.

Television and Public Life

Beyond recording, Khemarak Sereymun became a familiar face on Cambodian television. In 2019 he served as a judge on the first season of X Factor Cambodia, alongside fellow panelists Aok Sokunkanha, Nop Bayyareth, and Sok Seylalin. He also appeared as a featured performer at several of Cambodia's marquee annual concerts:

  • Hang Meas HDTV Christmas Concert, 2013
  • ETV K-POP Dream Concert, 2014
  • MYTV Coca-Cola Concert, 2015
  • Hang Meas HDTV Carabao Tour Concert, 2016
  • Hang Meas HDTV Phum Angkor Concert, 2017

Awards

  • Top 1 Singer, Nestle-Cambodia (Apsara TV-11), 1999
  • Best Male Singer of Cambodia, Anachak Dara Awards (Sabay Company), 2011
  • Cambodia Top Singer, Anachak Dara Awards (Sabay Company), 2013

Legacy

Across four labels and more than twenty years, Khemarak Sereymun's career traces the arc of modern Khmer popular music itself: from the cover-heavy cassette and VCD era of the early 2000s, through the satellite-TV concert boom of the 2010s, to today's more fragmented, cross-border streaming landscape. Now recording with Galaxy Navatra, few Cambodian artists of his generation have moved as fluidly between singing, acting, and television judging while staying continuously active since their debut.
